When live fish is the recipient of water, the water quality becomes extremely important. The gills of the fish will be in direct contact with the water. Gills work like a membrane, where passive and active transport of ions and gasses is a central part of the gill function. Amongst other things, this transport is part of getting oxygen into the blood of the fish, as well as getting CO2 out of the blood. These essential transport mechanisms are what we need to keep in mind while evaluating water quality for fish.
Water quality with regards to fish health can be evaluated based on three main criteria: the chemical state of the water, the amount of change in chemistry in the water, and the amount of large particles in the water.
Particles in the water represent a risk for the formation of a layer or film on the gills. At the same time, particles might be pathogens such as bacteria and viruses that can pose a threat to fish health. The chemical composition of the water is highly important to fish health. Metal ions are in general not desired components in the inlet water to fish farms. This is because metal ions tend to form a layer on the gills that can block important transport of compounds such as oxygen. With AkvaFresh membrane plant solutions, the metal concentrations are significantly reduced. Salinity, that is the amount of salt in the water, is also an important factor. During farming of salmon, there will be different optimal salinities at different growth stages. Sulphate is a Sulphur-containing compound found in large concentrations in sea water. If deposits of organic matter are made in fish plants, bacteria might grow that use the sulphate as the raw material to produce H2S (hydrogen sulphide). This compound is extremely toxic to aquatic life, even in very low concentrations, and may lead to substantial mortalities.
Fish can adapt to various environmental conditions. With large changes in water quality, the fish will use energy to adapt its metabolism. This will decrease the available energy to perform other metabolic tasks, such as growth and promotion of a healthy immune system.
